Democratic National Convention 2024: Everything You Need to Know

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is just around the corner, kicking off on Monday, August 19th, and running through Thursday, August 22nd in Chicago, Illinois. This pivotal event marks the formal nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

The DNC will be held across two prominent locations in Chicago: the United Center and McCormick Place. While the main events will take place within these venues, numerous third-party gatherings and activities are expected to occur throughout the city. Be prepared for potential street closures in Chicago during this period.

The 2024 DNC boasts an impressive lineup of speakers, beginning with President Joe Biden, who will address the convention on Monday. This event holds significance as it comes after President Biden announced his decision not to seek re-election in 2024. The convention will also feature speeches from other prominent figures, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (Monday), former President Barack Obama (Tuesday), former President Bill Clinton (Wednesday), and Democratic Vice Presidential nominee and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (Wednesday).

Kamala Harris will conclude the DNC with her nomination acceptance speech on Thursday. Additionally, Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, will represent his grandfather at the convention.

The DNC will see a total of 4,750 delegates, with 99% of the delegates originally pledged to Biden now supporting Harris. It’s important to understand that delegates are real individuals who will cast their votes to nominate a candidate at the convention. Out of the 4,750 delegates, 771 are designated as “superdelegates”. These superdelegates are party insiders, including individuals like Barack Obama, Democratic senators, and House members, who are not bound to any specific candidate and can vote for whoever they choose after the initial round of voting.

Historically, the Democratic National Convention has been a focal point for political protests and activism. This year is no different, with a March on the DNC already planned to address concerns regarding Democratic support for Israel, mass incarceration and deportation, and other critical issues. Protest groups have also voiced concerns about the city of Chicago potentially restricting their ability to utilize stages, platforms, or sound equipment during the convention.

While the DNC is primarily a political event, there’s always a glimmer of hope for some non-political excitement. Taylor Swift’s London tour concludes a few days before the convention, leading to speculation and hope for a possible appearance at the DNC.
