Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner has expressed concerns about President Biden’s performance in the recent debate and has called for a discussion among his fellow Democrats about Biden’s candidacy. Warner acknowledged that questions are being raised about Biden’s fitness for office and believes these concerns need to be addressed.
Warner, who has been reaching out to other Democrats, initially planned to gather a group for a meeting to discuss Biden’s status on the ticket. However, this effort was leaked to the press and the meeting was never scheduled. Instead, Democrats will discuss the matter at a regularly scheduled caucus meeting on Tuesday.
Warner emphasized the importance of defeating Donald Trump in the upcoming election, stating, “The most important thing we can do is defeat Donald Trump. If we don’t do that, we will set back America a generation.” However, he also believes that discussions about the path forward are necessary to ensure a strong Democratic campaign.
In an interview with reporters, Warner stated, “A lot of folks are raising some questions that need to get asked. But, end of the day, we got to beat Donald Trump.” He further added, “I’ve had lots and lots of input from folks across all walks of life across Virginia. And we’re gonna have to talk about that.”
Biden has dismissed Warner’s efforts, stating, “Mark is a good man. We’ve never had that – he also tried to get the nomination, too. Mark’s not – Mark and I have a different perspective. I respect him.”
Warner, in a statement, said, “With so much at stake in the upcoming election, now is the time for conversations about the strongest path forward.” He further emphasized the need for Biden to actively make his case to the American people and to engage in a broader dialogue about preventing Donald Trump from regaining power.
