Democrats Target Peer-to-Peer Payment Companies in Push for Government Control

A group of prominent Democratic politicians, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, Representative Maxine Waters, and Senator Richard Blumenthal, have joined forces to introduce legislation that would significantly impact peer-to-peer payment companies like PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle. This move comes as no surprise to former Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, who served on the House Financial Services Committee and witnessed similar attempts by Democrats to target these financial disruptors during his time in office.

Westmoreland argues that this legislation, the Protecting Consumers from Payment Scams Act, is a thinly veiled attempt by the Democratic party to exert greater control over the financial sector and ultimately promote government-run cryptocurrency solutions. He highlights a long-standing tension between the Democratic party and financial innovations like Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which they perceive as a threat to the hegemony of the US dollar, a crucial tool for funding their spending priorities.

The legislation proposes holding peer-to-peer payment processors responsible for every instance of scamming that occurs on their platforms. This means that if an American falls victim to a scam and sends money for nonexistent goods or services, the company would be held liable. While the legislation’s proponents claim it is necessary for public safety, Westmoreland argues this claim is disingenuous, as scams represent a negligible percentage of transactions on these platforms.

Westmoreland emphasizes that the true purpose behind the legislation is two-fold: to make it more challenging for these companies to operate financially and to generate negative press, ultimately driving away their vast user base. He believes this is a clear attempt by the Democratic party to stifle competition and push towards a more centralized, government-controlled financial system.

Westmoreland, however, remains optimistic, believing that the Republican-led House Financial Services Committee will reject this legislation and protect the interests of everyday Americans who benefit from these convenient and accessible payment methods.
