In a letter signed by over 80 lawmakers, the White House was requested to explore all available avenues for streamlining pathways to legal status for undocumented individuals. They emphasized the devastating impact deportations would have on the American economy and families, citing former President Trump’s previous threats to deport millions if re-elected.
The appeal from the lawmakers suggests steps like expediting processes for DACA recipients, allowing spouses of Americans to work during green card applications, and creating a process for granting parole to undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens.
Meanwhile, Trump has reaffirmed his intention to deport millions of undocumented migrants if he regains the presidency, even considering the use of the National Guard. Polls indicate that his chances of winning have improved in recent months.
The possibility of another Trump term has prompted the lawmakers to push for prompt action from the Biden administration. They believe it would provide relief for undocumented immigrants and the businesses, families, and communities that rely on them.
As of now, neither the White House nor the Biden campaign has responded to requests for comment on the matter.
