Destination Weddings Are Booming in India: Gen Z Leading the Trend

Destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular in India, with a whopping 85% of Indians either planning or having already hosted one, according to a new survey by Skyscanner titled ‘Destination ‘I Do’.’ Leading this trend is Generation Z, with almost half (49%) considering a destination wedding compared to 33% of millennials. This younger generation is drawn to the adventure and uniqueness of celebrating their special day in a new and exciting location, often inspired by the grandeur of high-profile weddings such as the Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant affair.

The survey also reveals a significant desire for extravagance in wedding celebrations, with 66% of Indians eager to host lavish pre-wedding festivities. This reflects the deep-rooted tradition of elaborate celebrations in Indian weddings, where families and friends come together to mark the momentous occasion.

Mohit Joshi, Skyscanner Travel Trends and Destination Expert, commenting on the survey, said, “Recent high-profile weddings have inspired more Indians to mark their wedding milestones with memorable celebrations such as destination weddings. Our research found that couples are prioritising unique experiences and are willing to invest more to create celebrations that truly reflect their aspirations.”

Asia Takes the Lead

When it comes to choosing a destination, Asia reigns supreme. A staggering 48% of Indian respondents are eyeing destinations like Thailand, Japan, and the Maldives for their wedding celebrations. The allure of these exotic locations, known for their beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and luxurious resorts, is evident. Europe, with its romantic charm, comes in second, captivating 31% of respondents with destinations like the UK, Spain, France, and Italy.

Top Picks for Indian Couples

Within India, Goa, Dubai, Bali, and Bangkok are the most popular choices for destination weddings. These destinations offer a perfect blend of luxury, culture, and natural beauty, making them ideal for celebrating a special occasion.

Dream Destination Vibes

For the perfect destination wedding vibe, 26% of respondents envision a romantic beach celebration with stunning sunsets and pristine sand. Another 20% are drawn to the opulence of a royal palace affair in locations like Jaipur or Udaipur. The survey also reveals a preference for soulful, personalized celebrations (19%) in picturesque spots like Tuscany, Lake Como, or Mussoorie, while the same percentage craves a glamorous event in vibrant cities like Dubai, New York, or Bahrain. 19% of respondents are also dreaming of a picturesque mountain backdrop, imagining a proposal set against stunning views in locations like Mussoorie, Munnar, or Switzerland.

Splurging on Wedding Dreams

Destination weddings come with a price tag, but Indian couples are ready to splurge! Nearly half (45%) of respondents are willing to boost their wedding budget by up to 50% for the extra adventure and create a truly unforgettable celebration, demonstrating that for many, a destination wedding is worth every extra penny.

Beyond the Usual Hotspots

To avoid the chaos of overbooked hotspots or inflated prices, 83% of Indian respondents are embracing off-the-beaten-path destinations. They are opting for hidden gems like Gokarna or Kalimpong instead of the traditional wedding hotspots like Shimla or Goa. This reflects a desire for unique and personalized experiences beyond the usual tourist trails.

Planning Ahead for the Perfect Celebration

Indians are known for their meticulous planning, and this extends to their destination weddings. A significant 62% of respondents start organizing their weddings up to 12 months in advance, ensuring that every detail is perfect. While 40% rely on wedding planners for expert guidance, 36% trust recommendations from friends and family for a personal touch.

This shift towards destination weddings highlights the evolving trends in Indian weddings, driven by Gen Z’s desire for unique experiences and a growing willingness to splurge on creating memorable celebrations. The survey also reveals that Indian couples are not afraid to think outside the box, embracing new destinations and planning meticulously to ensure their dream destination wedding becomes a reality.
