Massive Wildfire Engulfs Nainital, Threatening High Court Colony and Military Installations
A severe wildfire in Uttarakhand has intensified dramatically, with the flames now threatening the High Court Colony in Nainital. In response, local authorities have initiated a robust operation to control the fire, enlisting the help of forest department workers and military forces. Helicopters are also on standby to assist if conditions worsen.
The blaze originated close to the district headquarters of Nainital and now jeopardizes the residential area of High Court Colony, located in the Pines region. The fire has not only endangered homes but has also hindered the usual flow of traffic, raising fears about its potential spread. Concerns are growing that the wildfire could reach critical military facilities nearby, adding complexity to the efforts of the firefighting teams.
Nainital Administration Mobilizes to Combat the Crisis
As a safety measure, boating on Naini Lake has been temporarily suspended. To tackle this emergency, the Nainital administration has assembled a team of 42 specialists, including 40 members from the Manora Range and two forest rangers, dedicated to fighting the fire and reducing its impact on the community.
Uttarakhand Faces Alarming Surge in Wildfire Incidents
Moreover, the state’s forest department has noted an alarming increase in wildfire incidents, with 31 new fires reported in the regions of Kumaon and Garhwal in just one day, affecting over 33 hectares of forest. Since the start of November last year, Uttarakhand has faced 575 wildfire incidents, destroying nearly 690 hectares of forest and causing substantial financial damage estimated at over ₹14 lakh.

With the crisis ongoing, Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has called for increased vigilance and proactive strategies to curb further fire outbreaks. The government is determined to protect both lives and property from the destructive power of these fires.

The recurring issue of forest fires in Uttarakhand during the summer, driven by dry weather and high temperatures, poses a significant challenge.
