Chennai Super Kings’ hard-fought victory against Punjab Kings was marred by a controversial decision made by former captain MS Dhoni. Dhoni’s choice to bat at No. 9 drew the ire of cricket experts, who criticized him for “not taking responsibility” and jeopardizing the team’s chances of success.
Throughout the 2024 IPL season, Dhoni’s batting position has been a subject of debate. Despite his impressive strike rate and boundary rate, Dhoni has been reluctant to bat higher up the order, a decision that has puzzled many commentators and analysts.
In Sunday’s match against PBKS, Dhoni made history by batting at No. 9 for the first time in his illustrious career. This move left Irfan Pathan, the former India all-rounder, furious. Speaking on Star Sports, Pathan expressed his belief that Dhoni’s strategy is unsustainable for CSK, especially if they aspire to make the playoffs.
“MS Dhoni batting at No.9 doesn’t work for CSK, it’s doesn’t help the team’s cause,” Pathan stated. “He should be taking the responsibility of batting up the order. He can’t be doing the same thing that he has done on quite a few occasions.”
Pathan’s sentiments were echoed by Harbhajan Singh, another former India cricketer. Singh went so far as to suggest that Dhoni should be dropped from the playing XI if he insists on batting at a lower position.
“MS Dhoni shouldn’t play if he wants to bat at the number 9 slot,” Singh said. “He is the decision-maker and has let down his team by not coming out to bat.”
Dhoni’s decision to bat at No. 9 ultimately proved costly, as he was dismissed for a rare golden duck by Harshal Patel’s slower yorker. The criticism directed at Dhoni serves as a reminder of the importance of experienced players taking responsibility and making decisions that prioritize the team’s success.
