The Arizona Diamondbacks have added infielder Sergio Alcantara and left-hander Joe Jacques to their organization in separate transactions. Alcantara was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations, while Jacques was claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
Alcantara, 27, is a versatile infielder who has played for four different major league clubs in his career. He was traded to the Diamondbacks by the Chicago Cubs for cash before the 2022 season, then lost on a waiver claim to the San Diego Padres later in the season. However, he returned to the Diamondbacks in the same season on another waiver claim.
In three major league seasons, Alcantara has a .209 batting average with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. He spent last season at Triple-A in the Cubs’ organization and opened this season at Triple-A with the Pirates.
Jacques, 29, is a left-handed pitcher who made one appearance for the Red Sox this season, allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings. He has a 2-1 record and a 5.08 ERA in 24 appearances (one start) over two seasons with Boston.
Both Alcantara and Jacques have been placed on the 40-man roster and assigned to Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks are hoping that both players can contribute to their major league team in the future.
