Diane Hesterhagen, an influential and highly valued figure in Staten Island Catholic schools, passed away on Monday, April 22, surrounded by her beloved family. Hesterhagen’s exceptional career spanned various roles, including teacher, principal, and most recently, executive director of the Seton Foundation for Learning.
Hesterhagen’s journey in education began in 1986 when she joined St. Ann’s School in Dongan Hills as a teacher. Her passion for teaching and supporting young minds led her to become the principal of the former St. Adalbert’s School in Elm Park in 1997, where she dedicated 23 years of her life to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. In 2020, St. Adalbert’s merged with Holy Rosary in South Beach, forming the Father Vincent Capodanno Catholic Academy, with Hesterhagen continuing as its principal until 2023.
Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Hesterhagen also served as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University from 2014 to 2020, sharing her expertise and inspiring future educators. Throughout her career, she remained steadfast in her commitment to students with disabilities, piloting innovative programs within the Archdiocese of New York and serving on the Archdiocesan special education committee.
Hesterhagen’s dedication extended beyond the classroom. As the daughter of a New York City transit police officer and a World War II veteran, she held a deep admiration and respect for those who serve. She organized annual pre-Veterans Day breakfasts and assemblies at St. Adalbert’s School, honoring veterans and their families. Students expressed their gratitude through handmade cards and hearts, while veterans shared their stories, which were later compiled into a series of published books titled “Hometown Heroes.”
Her passion for community involvement was further evident in her role as vice president of the 121 Precinct Community Council, fostering a strong relationship between the community and the police. Hesterhagen’s commitment to education and civic engagement earned her the distinction of being named valedictorian of the NYPD Citizen’s Police Academy in June 2001.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in New Dorp, Staten Island, Hesterhagen cherished her family above all else. Married to her high school sweetheart, Robert, they shared a love for traveling and creating memories together. Hesterhagen’s joy was multiplied with the arrival of her four sons, Robert, Dylan, Michael, and Matthew, and two granddaughters, Adrianna and Alessandra.
Hesterhagen’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and the countless students whose lives she touched. A wake will be held at Hanley Funeral Home in New Dorp on Wednesday, followed by a funeral mass at Holy Rosary Church in South Beach on Thursday. Interment will take place at Oceanview Cemetery in Oakwood.
Diane Hesterhagen’s life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to education, community, and family. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who had the privilege of knowing her.
