Ryan Gosling has expressed his doubts about the possibility of a sequel to the 2016 film ‘The Nice Guys,’ citing the film’s underwhelming opening weekend performance. In an interview promoting his upcoming movie, Gosling stated that he doesn’t believe a sequel will materialize, jokingly attributing the decision to the success of ‘Angry Birds.’
Released in 2016, ‘The Nice Guys’ starred Gosling and Russell Crowe as a private eye and enforcer for hire, respectively, who team up to investigate a missing person’s case. Despite receiving positive reviews, the film underperformed at the box office, grossing only $62.8 million worldwide against a $50 million budget.
Despite its initial box office failure, ‘The Nice Guys’ has gained a cult following in the years since its release, particularly after landing on streaming services. Rumors of a potential sequel have persisted, with reports of plans for a television adaptation at one point. However, these plans never came to fruition.
According to Gosling, the film’s opening weekend performance against ‘Angry Birds’ was a major factor in the decision not to pursue a sequel. ‘So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,’ Gosling said. ‘So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.’
Despite Gosling’s pessimism, fans of ‘The Nice Guys’ may still hold out hope for a sequel, given the film’s enduring popularity and the continued discussions surrounding its potential continuation.
