Disgraced Ex-Rep. Santos Suspends Comeback Bid to Avoid Boosting Democrat
Former Republican Rep. George Santos, who resigned from Congress amid allegations of resume embellishments and campaign finance violations, has suspended his bid for a political comeback. Santos, who had switched his party affiliation to independent, announced on Tuesday that he was withdrawing his challenge to incumbent Republican Rep. Nick LaLota in New York’s 1st Congressional District.
Santos stated that his decision was motivated by concerns that his candidacy could divide the Republican vote and increase the likelihood of a Democrat winning the November election. He emphasized that he did not want to be responsible for handing the seat to the Democrats.
LaLota, who previously called Santos an “embarrassment,” has not commented directly on Santos’ challenge suspension. Santos, however, has suggested that he may return to politics in the future. He remains active on the digital content platform Cameo, where he sells personalized videos to his supporters.
In his statement, Santos expressed his desire to continue participating in public policy discussions and to “stand on the right side of history.” He stated, “It’s only goodbye for now, I’ll be back.”
