Before you can dive headfirst into the ocean, you’ll need the proper equipment. Head over to Nook’s Cranny and check the cabinet usually stocked with plants, tools, and wallpaper. There you’ll find a randomly selected wetsuit. Purchase one – a stylish striped wetsuit will cost you 3,000 bells – and slip it on to unlock your swimming abilities.
While not essential for swimming, a snorkel can add a touch of style to your underwater escapades. It won’t enhance your swimming speed or underwater endurance, but it’s a fun fashion statement.

Dive into the Ocean Blue

Once you’re in the water, you’ll want to explore its depths. Here’s how to dive:

While swimming, press the Y button to dive underwater.*
Step 2:
Use the A button and the left thumbstick to swim underwater. This is particularly useful for chasing elusive fish.*
Step 3:
Press the Y button again to resurface.You can stay submerged for a maximum of ten seconds per dive. However, there’s no limit to the number of dives you can take before needing a break – unlike real-life swimming!
Sea Creatures: The Underwater Treasures
Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduces a whole new category of critters to the Critterpedia – sea creatures. These elusive underwater inhabitants can only be found by diving into the ocean.
As you swim, you’ll notice bubbles accumulating on the surface, indicating the presence of sea creatures. Submerge and the camera will shift to a vertical perspective, revealing a shadow underwater. Position your islander above this shadow, and they’ll capture the unknown creature, adding a new entry to your Critterpedia.
To catch fish, you’ll need to act quickly, diving after these elusive creatures and snatching them up before they disappear.
Donate Your Sea Treasures
Sea creatures don’t have their own dedicated wing in the museum, but they’ll join the existing fish collection. Bring your first sea creature to Blathers, and he’ll proudly display it alongside your other catches.
