Diwali 2023: VHP Confirms October 31 as Festival Date, Deepotsav Celebrations in Ayodhya

The countdown to Diwali has begun, and with the festivities kicking off across India, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has stepped in to clear any lingering doubts about the exact date. The organization confirmed on Wednesday that Diwali will be celebrated on October 31, 2023, a date that coincides with Amavasya – the new moon phase. This confirmation marks the beginning of an important time for spiritual reflection and joyous celebration.

The VHP spokesperson, Sharad Sharma, stated that the festival will commence on the night of October 31, as the Amavasya phase begins that afternoon. This confirms that the festivities will unfold on the evening of October 31st, putting an end to any speculation surrounding the date.

Ahead of the main Diwali celebration, Ayodhya witnessed the grand Deepotsav on October 30. This year, the event took on added significance as it coincided with Hanuman Jayanti, a day dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Thousands upon thousands of diyas (earthen lamps) were lit along the banks of the Saryu River, creating a breathtaking spectacle that set a new world record. The entire town was adorned with decorations, and the air resonated with music in honor of Lord Ram.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presided over the Deepotsav celebrations, lighting the first few lamps alongside his cabinet members. The event was particularly special as it marked the first Deepotsav held since the consecration of the Ram Lalla temple on January 22, 2023.

The celebrations in Ayodhya continued with a vibrant procession featuring tableaux that depicted scenes from the Ramayana. Eighteen tableaux showcased episodes from Ramcharitmanas, making their way from Saket Mahavidyalaya to Ram Katha Park amidst bursts of colorful gulal (powder) and the sound of firecrackers. The procession highlighted key moments in Lord Ram’s life, including his education, marriage to Sita, the forest exile, the reunion with Bharat, Shabri’s devotion, Ashok Vatika, Hanuman’s journey to Lanka, Laxman’s injury, Ravana’s defeat, and the grand return to Ayodhya.

This year’s Diwali promises to be a special one, with the VHP’s confirmation providing clarity about the date and the Deepotsav celebrations in Ayodhya setting the stage for a grand and spiritually significant festival season.
