The brutal rape and murder of a young female doctor in Kolkata has sparked nationwide outrage and protests in India. In response to the incident, the Union health ministry has issued a directive to all hospitals, demanding they file a first information report (FIR) within six hours of any reported violence against healthcare professionals. The order comes amidst growing concerns about the safety of doctors and other medical staff, who frequently face physical and verbal abuse while on duty.
Dr. Atul Goel, director-general of health services, ministry of health and family welfare, highlighted the alarming trend of violence against healthcare professionals. He stated that the heads of institutions will be held responsible for ensuring timely police reports are filed in such cases.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the largest organization of doctors in India, has declared a nationwide strike starting on Saturday in protest against the lack of safety and the inadequate response to violence against medical professionals. The strike is expected to involve over one million doctors, disrupting most medical services, except emergency and critical care treatments.
The strike follows the harrowing incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9th, where a young female doctor was sexually assaulted and killed. This incident has fueled a national outcry, drawing parallels to the 2012 Delhi gangrape and murder that prompted significant legislative changes regarding sexual assault in India.
In light of recent incidents, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has urged all medical colleges to develop comprehensive workplace safety policies. These policies should include security measures in all areas of the campus, including the outpatient department (OPD), wards, casualty, hostels, and residential quarters. The NMC has specifically recommended the deployment of male and female security personnel, enhanced lighting, and CCTV surveillance in sensitive areas.
The IMA has demanded stricter measures to protect doctors and ensure swift justice for victims of violence. The organization emphasizes that a stronger legislative framework is needed to guarantee the safety of the medical caregiving community and prevent future tragedies.
