Dominic Monaghan, the actor who portrayed Merry in the ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, has publicly expressed his disapproval of Brexit and encouraged individuals who qualify to obtain an Irish passport. Monaghan, who was born in Berlin and later moved to England, currently resides in Los Angeles. He recently revealed on Instagram that he has successfully applied for an Irish passport, citing his family history as the basis for his eligibility.
Monaghan’s decision to acquire an Irish passport stems from his disillusionment with Brexit, which he refers to as ‘a con.’ He emphasizes his disappointment with the lack of positive outcomes from Brexit and advocates for maintaining connections and collaborating within Europe. The actor underscores his rejection of the notion of separation and the dismantling of a collective future.
Since the UK’s departure from the EU, significant changes have been implemented. British citizens have lost their EU citizenship and free movement rights, which previously allowed them to reside, work, and study across the EU without requiring a visa. Brexit has also impacted travel for British citizens, with new passport regulations in place for non-EU members traveling to the Schengen Area.
Meanwhile, Monaghan’s podcast project, ‘Moriarty: The Silent Order,’ which is part of the Sherlock Holmes universe, has been commissioned for a second season. Premiering in July 2022, the 10-episode podcast features the voices of Monaghan and Phil LaMarr as Professor James Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes respectively. Season 2 will introduce prominent actors such as Helen Mirren, Anya Chalotra, Ross McCall, and Arielle Goldman, and is set to release on November 9th.
