Prosecutors in the criminal trial of former US President Donald Trump opened their case on Monday, accusing him of engaging in “criminal conspiracy and a coverup.” They allege that Trump falsified business records to pay $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels to silence her about a potentially embarrassing sexual encounter.
Trump is the first former president to face criminal charges, and the case poses significant risks to him as he considers a 2024 White House bid. The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks, and Trump could face jail time if convicted. However, analysts say a fine or probation is more likely.
Trump has condemned the case as a “witch hunt” and “election interference.” He has repeatedly attacked the judge and the prosecutors, and he has been ordered to attend each day of the trial.
The trial is taking place in a dingy courtroom in Manhattan, and security is tight after a man set himself on fire outside the courthouse last week. A hearing will be held on Tuesday to determine if Trump is in contempt of court for outbursts during jury selection.
Potential jurors were grilled last week about their media habits, political donations, and whether they have attended pro- or anti-Trump rallies. Many potential panelists were excused after saying they could not be impartial, and the jury was eventually whittled down to 12 jurors with six alternates.
A unanimous verdict will be required to convict Trump.
