Doncaster Sheffield Airport Could Reopen With TUI Eager to Return

Amidst positive signs, Doncaster Sheffield Airport could soon witness a revival, with flights resuming to sunny destinations. Mayor Ros Jones has expressed optimism regarding the potential return of TUI, the last major airline to operate from the Yorkshire travel hub before its closure in late 2022. “We have engaged TUI with the bidders for their return to our airport to be explored, and we are hopeful that we will see TUI’s brand back in Doncaster,” Mayor Jones stated. “With the right operator, our airport has incredible potential to truly thrive and be the economic stimulus that we all know it can and should be.” The airport’s closure in November 2022 sparked outrage among locals, compounded by the loss of 800 jobs and the impact on 2,700 more. Despite assurances from Mayor Coppard and Doncaster Council to underwrite operations for a year, owners Peel Group cited the airport’s lack of “commercial viability” as the reason for its closure. In August, it was reported that the Mayor’s office and Doncaster Council were close to acquiring a 100-year lease on the site from Peel Group, potentially paving the way for flights to resume within two years. The council secured access to £138 million in funding to facilitate negotiations with potential investors. Commenting on the developments, a TUI spokesperson expressed enthusiasm about engaging with stakeholders regarding a potential reopening, noting the positive airport experience previously provided to customers. “Doncaster Sheffield Airport delivered a fantastic airport experience for our customers, and we are excited about actively engaging with stakeholders about a potential re-opening,” the spokesperson said. With the aim of establishing a world-leading center for sustainable aviation, Mayor Jones emphasized the need for an operator who shares this vision and collaborates to make it a reality. Once the procurement process concludes, an official announcement regarding the airport’s future will be made.
