During the June 2024 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo surprised fans by announcing an HD remaster of the beloved platformer, Donkey Kong Country Returns, for the Nintendo Switch. The game is scheduled to launch on January 16, 2025, bringing back the classic adventure with updated visuals. While the announcement didn’t specify the studio behind the remaster, it’s heavily suspected to be Retro Studios, the original developer of Donkey Kong Country Returns and the team behind the recent Metroid Prime Remastered.
The trailer for the remaster showcased a few levels with upgraded visuals, hinting at the graphical enhancements fans can expect. Notably, the HD remaster will include all the levels from the Nintendo 3DS version, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, which was developed by Monster Games. This means players will have a total of 80 levels to conquer, and the game will also feature two-player local co-op, offering an enjoyable experience for friends and family.
So far, it seems like Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will be a faithful remaster, offering the complete package from both the Wii and 3DS versions without any new content. However, this comprehensive collection is sure to excite fans who missed out on the original releases or those eager to revisit the classic game with enhanced visuals and gameplay.
It’s interesting to note that this is the first Donkey Kong game that didn’t involve original developer Rare, who were acquired by Microsoft in 2002. Retro Studios, known for their work on the critically acclaimed Metroid Prime series, stepped in and delivered a fantastic entry in the Donkey Kong franchise with Donkey Kong Country Returns. They also handled the impressive Metroid Prime Remastered last year and are currently developing the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is set for release in 2025. While it remains unclear whether Metroid Prime 4 will launch on the current Switch or its successor, it’s safe to say Retro Studios has a busy schedule ahead.
In the meantime, fans of Donkey Kong Country Returns can look forward to reliving the adventure with the HD remaster. Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned platformer veteran, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD promises to be a delightful addition to the Nintendo Switch library.
