The New York Knicks have defied expectations this season, earning the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference despite facing major injuries throughout the season. One of the key contributors to their success has been Donte DiVincenzo, who has emerged as a reliable and dynamic player for the team.
Signed as a free agent in the 2023 NBA offseason, DiVincenzo initially faced skepticism from some who saw his signing as a nepotism move, given his collegiate ties to several other Knicks players. However, he quickly proved his worth, becoming an integral part of the team’s lineup and seeing his production skyrocket when he was inserted into the starting five permanently in early December.
In the absence of injured stars like Julius Randle and OG Anunoby, DiVincenzo stepped up and took his game to another level. He became more aggressive, looking to take pressure off of Jalen Brunson, and his 3-point shooting was crucial for spacing the floor. Additionally, his athleticism and playmaking ability allowed him to get to the rim and create in the paint.
DiVincenzo’s impressive performances have drawn comparisons to former Knicks guard John Starks by Knicks legend and current color commentator Walt Frazier. Frazier has witnessed countless players come and go during his time in New York, but he sees something special in DiVincenzo, likening him to the tenacious, energetic, and clutch-shooting Starks.
“He’s the second coming of John Starks, man,” Frazier said in a Q&A with Steve Serby of The New York Post. “He’s tenacious like Starks & hellacious…creates a little havoc on defense, excellent at getting in the passing lane, huffing & stuffing…can ignite a crowd.”
Like Starks, who was a fan favorite during his eight seasons with the Knicks, DiVincenzo has brought energy and excitement to the shooting guard position. He has demonstrated solid two-way play, mixing aggressive defense with clutch shooting, and has already created a lasting highlight in Knicks history with his game-winning 3-pointer against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 2 of the first-round series in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
Sitting courtside and celebrating DiVincenzo’s shot was none other than Starks himself, along with other Knicks legends Carmelo Anthony and Latrell Sprewell. Their presence served as a testament to the impact that DiVincenzo has had on this year’s squad, and to the bright future that lies ahead for the young guard and the New York Knicks.
