Doom Runs on Fortnite: Indie Developer Pulls Off the Unthinkable

The “Can it Run Doom?” meme continues to amaze and entertain, pushing the boundaries of what we consider possible. This latest entry, however, might be the most impressive yet. Indie developer Jackson Clayton has managed to get Doom running on Fortnite, showcasing the iconic first-person shooter in a surprisingly fitting way.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Clayton controls Doomguy, seemingly ready to embark on E1M1, the first level of Doom. But instead of charging into battle, Doomguy turns and begins utilizing Fortnite Battle Royale’s building mechanics. Clayton achieved this by exporting the Doom level from Ultimate Doom Builder in 3D, importing it into Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), and then stripping away many of the editor’s effects. He then employed Unreal’s material system to create the distinctive Doom Marine sprite, adding pixelation and other visual elements to emulate the original game’s aesthetic.

While this isn’t a fully functional Doom experience you can play on Fortnite, it’s a testament to the creative potential of the platform. The fact that a 1993 classic like Doom can be made to run even on a game like Fortnite further cements its enduring legacy and the power of its engine. For those looking to experience more of Doom, the next installment in the reboot series, Doom: The Dark Ages, is slated for release in 2025. The original Doom trilogy is also widely accessible, with versions available for Android, iOS, and other platforms.
