Double Olympic Bronze Medalist Manu Bhaker Takes a Break from Shooting

Double Olympic bronze medalist Manu Bhaker has announced that she will be taking a well-deserved break from shooting, opting out of the upcoming ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi in October. Her coach, Jaspal Rana, had previously hinted at the possibility of a break, recognizing the grueling schedule Bhaker has faced in preparation for the Paris Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old shooter, who secured her place in the ISSF season-ender by securing a podium finish at the Olympics, will utilize this time to give her shoulder a much-needed rest. “I will be taking a break because it has been eight-and-a-half years without a break. Now I have decided to give my shoulder a little rest. I will be taking a three-month break. After that, I will be starting again. I will start competing after four or five months,” Bhaker shared during a felicitation ceremony at the Velammal group of institutions on Tuesday.

Looking ahead, Bhaker remains optimistic about the future of Indian shooting, emphasizing the need for consistent dedication and improved resources. “When it comes to shooting as a sport in India, we have huge potential. We have a lot of talent in our country. If we put in more effort and have more resources, the results can be even better. We finished with three bronze medals, we can do even better in the future. The junior programme, how we take athletes from a young age… all that needs to be started. All that needs to be persistent. We are showing progression, but we can do things to improve further,” she stated.

Bhaker also shared insightful advice with the students during her visit, emphasizing the importance of individuality and staying true to one’s own path. “Take inspiration from people, but do not try to become like somebody else. If you try to copy someone, you will lose your speciality. When I read Usain Bolt’s book (Faster Than Lightning: My Autobiography), I was able to connect with him in many ways. Take inspiration from different people, but make your own path and way,” she advised.

During the felicitation, Bhaker, after initial hesitation, delighted the audience by singing a Hindi song and later showed off her dance moves, showcasing her multifaceted personality beyond the shooting range.
