In a move to avoid clashing with Paramount’s ‘Transformers One,’ DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Wild Robot’ will now hit theaters on September 27 instead of September 20. The decision was made after Paramount’s animated film muscled into the September 20 slot, while Universal showcased footage of its upcoming film, ‘Never Let Go,’ at CinemaCon, impressing exhibitors and potentially posing another threat to ‘The Wild Robot’s’ box office performance. Additionally, Warner Bros.’ ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ expected to scare up a ton of September cash, is slated to open on September 6, further influencing DreamWorks’ decision to move ‘The Wild Robot’s’ release date.
Based on Peter Brown’s New York Times No. 1 bestseller, ‘The Wild Robot’ follows ROZZUM unit 7134, a robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. Faced with harsh surroundings, Roz must adapt and build relationships with the animals on the island, eventually becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling. The film features an impressive voice cast, including Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as Roz, Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal as fox Fink, Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara as opossum Pinktail, Oscar nominee Bill Nighy as goose Longneck, Kit Connor as gosling Brightbill, and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as Vontra. Other notable voices include Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames.
With a screenplay and direction by 3x Oscar nominee Chris Sanders, known for his work on ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ ‘The Croods,’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ and produced by Jeff Hermann (‘The Boss Baby 2: Family Business’ and co-producer of the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ franchise), ‘The Wild Robot’ promises to be an animated adventure that explores themes of family, friendship, and survival.
