Dubai, a thriving metropolis in the United Arab Emirates, has swiftly established itself as a global leader in medical tourism. The city boasts cutting-edge medical facilities, a diverse range of highly specialized treatments, and a strong emphasis on luxury and patient comfort. This unique blend of high-quality healthcare and opulence makes Dubai an alluring destination for international patients seeking medical care.
Strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Dubai attracts patients from around the world, primarily drawn to its advanced medical technology and internationally certified medical professionals. According to a report by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the majority of medical tourists in Dubai originate from Asian countries (39%), followed by Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (22%), and Arab and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (21%). These visitors seek Dubai’s expertise in areas such as orthopedic procedures, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, fertility treatments, hospital stays, and post-treatment recovery, highlighting the city’s growing appeal as a premier medical destination.
Dubai’s specialization in a wide array of medical treatments is a key driver of its medical tourism industry. The city is renowned for its expertise in dermatology, dentistry, gynecology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and fertility treatments. Internationally acclaimed specialists and healthcare professionals are drawn to Dubai, further solidifying its reputation as a center of excellence in various medical fields.
In January, Dubai Healthcare City launched a new medical visa program, allowing treatment centers to apply for visas ranging from three to six months on behalf of their patients. This initiative aims to facilitate the influx of international patients seeking treatment in Dubai, further cementing the city’s status as a leading medical tourism destination.
The Dubai Health Authority reported that in 2022, the city received 674,000 medical tourists who spent Dh992 million ($270 million), a significant increase from Dh262 million the previous year. This economic impact underscores the growing importance of medical tourism to Dubai’s economy and its continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and services.
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) plays a pivotal role in overseeing and enhancing healthcare services in Dubai. Its primary objective is to regulate and improve the healthcare system, ensuring residents and visitors have easy access to high-quality care. The government has proactively created a welcoming environment that supports medical tourism. Additionally, DHA collaborates with renowned international healthcare institutions to establish facilities capable of meeting the growing demand for specialized treatments.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has simplified the process for foreigners seeking medical treatment by introducing the medical treatment visa, known as the Patient Entry Permit. Alongside this, the UAE authorities also issue a Patient Companion Entry Permit. These initiatives have significantly contributed to the increase in medical tourism to the UAE, aided by the country’s flourishing economy and modern hospitals that rival those in the Western world.
The UAE’s hospitals, both private and public, offer a wide range of medical and cosmetic surgeries. Foreigners from visa-required countries intending to undergo medical treatment in the UAE must obtain a Patient Entry Permit through designated visa-issuing authorities. The UAE’s world-class medical facilities and highly skilled professionals make it a top destination for medical tourism.
The UAE medical visa allows patients to stay in the country for up to 90 days from the date of entry. Extensions are possible by paying the required fee. There are two types of medical treatment visas:
*
Patient Entry Permit:
This visa is issued to patients who are coming to the UAE for medical treatment.*
Patient Companion Entry Permit:
This visa is issued to the patient’s companion who is accompanying them for medical treatment.Unlike the Dubai tourist visa, the medical visa application process does not require visiting consulates or agencies. The patient entry permit is arranged by the sponsoring medical institution through the online platform of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA). The sponsoring hospital must be licensed and registered in the UAE. The processing time for a medical UAE visa online is quick, typically issued in less than 48 hours.
Dubai International Airport plays a pivotal role in the growth of medical tourism in the city. The airport offers a range of services tailored to medical tourists, including fast-track immigration procedures, special assistance for patients with mobility issues, and dedicated medical lounges equipped with necessary facilities. Additionally, the proximity of the airport to major medical centers in Dubai ensures that patients can quickly and easily reach their treatment destinations, further enhancing the appeal of Dubai as a premier medical tourism hub.
