Dubai International Airport has taken a drastic step, denying check-in privileges to SpiceJet passengers on Thursday. This action comes as a consequence of mounting unpaid dues owed by the budget carrier to the airport, as reported by The Hindu, citing industry sources. This incident further adds to the list of troubles faced by SpiceJet, despite multiple fundraises undertaken in the past year to stabilize its financial position.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is closely monitoring the situation, as confirmed by a senior official from the ministry. Earlier this month, SpiceJet announced a settlement with Mumbai Airport regarding a “minor financial matter.” This followed a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Mumbai Airport, warning of potential temporary disruptions to SpiceJet operations. The post was subsequently removed. According to Reuters, this recent episode in Dubai is a significant indicator of the financial struggles faced by SpiceJet. The airline’s ability to navigate these financial challenges and regain stability remains a concern for both the aviation industry and its passengers.
