Dubai Green Spine: Transforming E311 into the ‘World’s Greenest Highway’

Dubai is adding another ambitious project to its already impressive landscape, the ‘Dubai Green Spine’. Announced by developers URB and Epic Lab, this megaproject aims to transform the city’s Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road, also known as E311, into the ‘world’s greenest highway’.

The 64-kilometer-long highway will act as a sustainable corridor, incorporating a wide range of features aimed at creating a greener and more livable urban environment. At the heart of the project is an extensive solar-powered tram system designed to connect Dubai’s major neighborhoods from Muhaisnah to Dubai Industrial City. This non-motorized form of transport will not only provide a cleaner mode of transportation but also contribute to Dubai’s broader clean energy initiatives.

The Dubai Green Spine aligns perfectly with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan. It will incorporate biodiversity with over a million trees, creating expansive green spaces. These spaces will also feature native flora, dedicated pedestrian and cycling tracks, and energy-efficient buildings, promoting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. The project also includes agriculture initiatives like vertical farms, further contributing to the sustainability goals of the project.

Together with the solar-powered trams, the project aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, making Dubai a more environmentally friendly city. This initiative exemplifies how integrated and thoughtful urban planning can transform cities, making them more livable and human-centric.

Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, highlights the project’s focus on improving the quality of life: “The Dubai Green Spine isn’t just about transit; it’s about transforming how cities function, making them more livable and human-centric. This initiative exemplifies how integrated, thoughtful urban planning can drastically improve city life, turning everyday environments into vibrant ecosystems that nurture both people and the planet.”

The Dubai Green Spine is just one of many exciting new projects on the horizon for Dubai. Other upcoming projects include a new luxury shopping destination, a new airport set to be the world’s biggest (five times the size of the existing airport), and a floating opera by Azizi Venice. This ambitious approach to urban development reflects Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, shaping the city into a global hub for future-focused living.
