Ducks Unlimited Canada Encourages Canadians to Participate in World Cleanup Day 2024

Last year, over 19 million people from 198 countries participated in World Cleanup Day, a global initiative held on September 20th. This year, the event has gained even greater recognition by being officially included in the United Nations calendar of days.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is encouraging Canadians to join the effort, particularly in protecting wildlife habitats. With the support of Unsmoke Canada and The Great Outdoors Fund, DUC is organizing and promoting cleanup events across the country from September 20-29, 2024. The theme for this year is “Make Room for Life,” a timely message as it precedes the United Nations COP16 conference on Biodiversity in October. This conference will see world leaders come together to review progress on implementing the Biodiversity Plan and align strategies for the future.

Pollution is a significant threat to biodiversity, with litter, particularly single-use plastics and cigarette butts, posing a danger to wildlife in both terrestrial and marine environments. Animals like ducks can ingest debris, leading to choking hazards, punctures or obstructions in their digestive systems, and even illness.

The problem doesn’t end with visible litter. Microplastics, resulting from the breakdown of larger plastics, are being found in the digestive systems and even tissues of various species. More research is needed to fully understand the impact of microplastics on wildlife health and populations.

DUC’s participation in World Cleanup Day focuses on collecting and properly recycling waste, including cigarette butts and plastics, which pose considerable threats to wildlife. “Canadians appreciate natural spaces and are passionate about the environment,” says Michael Nadler, CEO of Ducks Unlimited Canada. “Ducks Unlimited Canada is proud to be part of World Cleanup Day 2024 and encourages our community of employees, volunteers, partners, and supporters to get involved and show what we can accomplish together.”
