Sarah Nathan, a passionate advocate for wetland conservation and Manager of Provincial Operations for British Columbia at Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), has been honored with the prestigious King Charles III’s Coronation Medal. This distinction, bestowed by the Honourable Nathan Cullen, B.C. Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, recognizes Sarah’s years of dedication to environmental protection and wildlife conservation in British Columbia.
Since joining DUC in 2016, Sarah has been instrumental in implementing conservation projects across British Columbia. She leads a team of dedicated professionals who work on a wide range of innovative projects aimed at protecting and restoring critical wetland habitats. Sarah’s commitment to conservation is evident in her tireless work behind the scenes, enabling impactful initiatives like a first-in-Canada pilot project led by her colleague Eric Balke. This project involves transferring reclaimed sediment from the Fraser River to fortify the receding Sturgeon Banks in Metro Vancouver, demonstrating a unique approach to wetland restoration.
Beyond her work at DUC, Sarah also contributes to conservation efforts as a volunteer director on the boards of the Invasive Species Council of B.C. and Wildlife Habitat Canada. She is a vocal advocate for beaver-facilitated wetland restoration in the Pacific Northwest, recognizing the vital role these ecosystems play in supporting biodiversity and making landscapes resilient to climate change impacts like drought, fire, and flood.
In a virtual award ceremony, B.C. Minister Nathan Cullen praised Sarah’s commitment to conservation, highlighting her ability to bring people together to find common ground on important environmental issues. Michael Nadler, Chief Executive Officer of Ducks Unlimited Canada, expressed pride in Sarah’s achievements and the positive impact she has had on British Columbia’s natural resources.
The King Charles III’s Coronation Medal is a fitting recognition of Sarah Nathan’s dedication to environmental conservation. It serves as a testament to Ducks Unlimited Canada’s commitment to protecting Canada’s natural heritage for future generations.
