E-Passes Mandatory for Ooty and Kodaikanal Getaway from May 7 to June 30

To manage tourist influx and preserve the Nilgiris’ ecosystem, the Madras High Court has mandated e-passes for entry into Ooty and Kodaikanal from May 7 to June 30, 2024. Notably, while there is no limit on e-pass issuance, locals are exempt from this requirement.

This move also addresses traffic congestion, a persistent issue in these hill stations. By enforcing e-passes, the court intends to monitor vehicular movement on the challenging ghat roads leading to these destinations.

Ooty, or Udagamandalam, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and pleasant climate, earning it the title of “Queen of Hill Stations.” Among its attractions, the Government Botanical Gardens, spanning 55 acres, and Ooty Lake, a serene water body built in 1824, are highlights not to be missed.

Nestled in the Western Ghats, Kodaikanal offers a tranquil escape amidst misty mountains and lush valleys. Kodaikanal Lake, a man-made marvel spanning 60 acres, and Coaker’s Walk, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, are must-visit spots for travelers seeking serenity in nature’s embrace.

District Collectors are tasked with establishing an online platform for e-pass issuance. These passes are essential for entry, ensuring regulated access and easing traffic snarls. The initiative stems from a directive by a special bench of Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar, who aim to tackle the challenges posed by tourism surges in these hill stations.
