An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale struck the Sonbhadra district in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, June 2, causing tremors across the region. The seismic activity was reported around 3:49 PM, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake’s epicenter was located at Latitude 24.61 N and Longitude 83.06 E, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
The earthquake prompted immediate responses from the local administration, although initial reports suggest no damage or casualties. The district of Sonbhadra is known for its mineral wealth.
The NCS has reported a series of earthquakes in recent days, including a 3.5 magnitude earthquake in Manipur’s Chandel district early Sunday morning and a 3.1 magnitude earthquake in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh on May 28.
The earthquakes come at a time when several rivers in the state are flowing above danger levels, according to data from the Central Water Commission.
