East Bengal FC has made a significant move to bolster their defense by retaining the services of their star defender, Hijazi Maher, until the end of the 2025-26 season. The 26-year-old Jordanian center-back was a key figure in the team’s success last season, earning the accolade of Best Defender in East Bengal’s victorious Kalinga Super Cup 2024 campaign.
Since joining the Red & Gold Brigade in September of last year, Hijazi has proven to be a formidable force in the heart of the defense, amassing an impressive 1,938 minutes across 22 matches (17 in the ISL and 5 in the Kalinga Super Cup). His performances have been marked by consistency and dominance, as evidenced by his outstanding defensive statistics.
In the previous Indian Super League season, Hijazi recorded the second-highest clearances (99), second-highest headed clearances (58), and the second-most blocks (22), showcasing his aerial prowess and ability to shut down opposing attacks. His impact was further highlighted in East Bengal’s away fixture against Mumbai City FC, where he registered a remarkable 14 clearances, setting a new record for the most clearances by a player in a single ISL 2023-24 match.
Beyond his defensive solidity, Hijazi also displayed his ability to contribute offensively, netting two goals in the Kalinga Super Cup. This versatility makes him a valuable asset to the East Bengal team, as he can not only stifle opposition attacks but also provide a threat in the final third.
With Hijazi’s commitment to East Bengal FC secured for the next two seasons, the club can look forward to a continued strong defensive presence and a potent force in the upcoming Indian Super League campaign.
