The construction of the last cross-passage of East-West Metro’s Esplanade-Sealdah section below Raja Subodh Mullick Square, which was stalled for three days due to ground water seepage, resumed on Monday. Extensive grouting has been on at the site below Hind Inox for several months now. On April 15, KMRC and ITD ITD-Cementation, builders of the 2.5km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch, managed to start micro-tunneling work, which is the main part of the cross-passage, with the help of the sophisticated “new Austrian tunnelling method” or NATM. But on Thursday, despite firming up the surround layers of soil with extensive grouting, water started seeping through two spots. Immediately, the micro-tunneling work was stopped. Since then, from Friday to Sunday, more chemical and cement grouting was done. Finally, micro-tunneling resumed on Monday.
