easyJet is leading the charge towards sustainable aviation by adopting a fleet of electric vehicles for its engineering operations. The airline is phasing out traditional petrol and diesel vans in favor of eco-friendly electric alternatives at key bases across the UK and Europe. This ambitious move is expected to reduce emissions from its engineering fleet by a significant 28%.
The transition to electric vehicles has already begun at major bases including Berlin Brandenburg, London Luton, Bristol, and Liverpool airports, with 36 electric vans already in service. easyJet plans to expand this initiative rapidly, aiming to have 80% of its engineering bases operating with fully electric vehicles by 2025. This phased implementation is a key component of the airline’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, focused on transforming ground operations.
By switching to electric vehicles, easyJet anticipates saving around 54 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually. This significant reduction is a testament to the airline’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. Jane Ashton, easyJet’s Director of Sustainability, highlighted the success of an initial trial in Berlin, which fueled the decision to roll out the program across multiple bases. The shift to electric maintenance vehicles is just one aspect of easyJet’s broader sustainability strategy. The airline is also actively upgrading its aircraft fleet and integrating new technologies to improve fuel efficiency and operational effectiveness. Since launching its sustainability roadmap two years ago, easyJet has already achieved a 5% reduction in carbon intensity compared to 2019.
