EasyJet Expands Operations at London Southend Airport with New Spanish Routes

EasyJet has announced plans to expand its operations at London Southend Airport with the introduction of five new flight routes. Four of these routes will launch in the summer of 2025, connecting the airport with popular Spanish destinations. Travelers will be able to fly to Almeria, Reus, Tenerife South, and Gran Canaria from London Southend Airport.

The first new route to Gran Canaria will begin on March 30, 2025, with flights operating three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The Tenerife South route will commence on April 1, 2025, with flights operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The routes to Almeria and Reus will also begin on April 1, with flights available on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

In December 2024, EasyJet will launch a new route connecting Gran Canaria and Edinburgh, with weekly flights operating every Saturday.

This expansion is part of EasyJet’s broader strategy to increase its presence at London Southend Airport. The new routes are expected to create approximately 130 jobs for pilots and crew members, as well as additional employment opportunities in the surrounding areas.

The expansion is expected to boost tourism in the Canary Islands. However, local activists have expressed concerns about the impact of increased tourist numbers on the region. The Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC) predicts a surge in tourism, particularly from British and Spanish visitors to Lanzarote and Tenerife, with occupancy rates expected to exceed 80% in August 2024.
