The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) provided an update on Project Gaslight, an investigation into 34 incidents involving extortion and arson targeting South Asian home builders in Edmonton. Despite a recent decline in cases, the investigation continues. According to Staff Sgt. Dave Paton, the EPS has made progress in the investigation through police tactics and community engagement. Six young men and a youth have been arrested and charged in connection with the extortion series. Surveillance videos have also been released to identify additional suspects. Investigators believe the young suspects may have been recruited for financial incentives or other obligations to the person directing the operation in India. Ten investigators and two analysts are working on the case, and the EPS is collaborating with the RCMP, who have been in contact with investigators in India. The recent killing of Edmonton businessman Buta Singh Gill is not related to the extortion incidents, according to Paton. The EPS continues to investigate the incidents and encourages the community to report any suspicious activity.
