Edmonton police are investigating a disturbing trend of objects being thrown from an overpass onto Whitemud Drive in the west end. Between March 27 and June 22, 2024, there have been 12 reported incidents where rocks or heavy debris were allegedly thrown from the pedestrian bridge on the overpass and onto vehicles traveling on Whitemud Drive between 149th Street and 184th Street.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) emphasized the severity of these crimes, stating that they have caused significant damage to vehicles and could have easily resulted in injuries to the occupants. In a news release, Const. Tylar Heigh highlighted the potential consequences of such reckless actions, stating, “Throwing objects at moving vehicles can have severe consequences, including the death of civilians and serious criminal charges for the accused.”
The EPS cited a similar incident from 2002, where a 75-year-old man was killed after an object was thrown from an overpass, resulting in the arrest of two teenagers on manslaughter charges.
The recent incidents on Whitemud Drive are not isolated. Police are currently investigating whether these crimes are connected to similar cases that occurred on the same highway in south Edmonton between late 2023 and early 2024.
The EPS is urging anyone with information about these incidents to contact them at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
This is a serious matter with potentially devastating consequences. The EPS is dedicated to investigating these cases and bringing those responsible to justice.
