Edmontonians can anticipate a lively summer experience as a portion of Rice Howard Way transforms into an entertainment district. The City of Edmonton and the Downtown Business Association have joined forces to create a block-long street patio, marking the city’s first-ever designated entertainment zone. This pilot project is part of a broader initiative to enhance downtown vibrancy, increase foot traffic, and support local businesses. From 100th Street to 101st Street, Rice Howard Way will be closed to vehicles from 7:00 AM on Saturdays until 10:00 AM on Sundays, allowing pedestrians to freely explore the district. Vehicle traffic will continue on 100A Street. Participating businesses, including Rosewood Foods and Sherlock Holmes Pub, will offer food and beverages for purchase and consumption within the district’s boundaries. The entertainment lineup includes live music, games, and outdoor movie nights, with the Downtown Spark Block Party kicking off the weekly programming. Puneeta McBryan, Executive Director of the Downtown Business Association, highlights the unique aspect of this initiative, allowing restaurants and bars to directly benefit from pedestrian traffic without the need for separate beer tents or fenced-off areas. The project draws funding from the downtown vibrancy fund and serves as a model for future similar initiatives across Edmonton.
