Egypt Upsets Spain to Reach Olympic Football Quarterfinals

Egypt stunned Spain in their final Group C match of the men’s Olympic football tournament, securing a surprising 2-1 victory that sent them through to the quarterfinals. Ibrahim Adel was the hero for Egypt, scoring both goals to propel his team to the top of the group. Adel opened the scoring in Bordeaux with a brilliant strike late in the first half, giving Egypt a deserved lead. He then doubled the advantage on 62 minutes, pouncing on a loose ball after Spain’s Jon Pacheco gave away possession. Samu Omorodion pulled one back for Spain late in the match, but Egypt held on for the crucial victory.

This triumph saw Egypt leapfrog their already-qualified opponents and claim top spot in Group C, ensuring a favorable draw in the knockout stage. Egypt, captained by former Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny, will face the runner-up of Group D in their quarterfinal matchup on Friday in Marseille. Group D features Japan, Paraguay, Mali, and Israel.

Egypt will be looking to avenge their quarterfinal defeat to Brazil three years ago, who went on to win the tournament against Spain. Spain, on the other hand, will face the winner of Group D in Lyon in their last-eight tie.

Host nation France and two-time gold medallists Argentina are among the teams vying for a spot in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
