Egypt is embarking on a monumental endeavor known as the Great Transfiguration Project, aiming to transform the breathtaking mountainous landscapes of St. Catherine city in South Sinai. This ambitious initiative envisions St. Catherine as a global sanctuary for spiritual seekers and a premier destination for medical and environmental tourism.
The project seeks to leverage the region’s profound spiritual, religious, archaeological, and historical heritage. It aims to elevate St. Catherine to a must-visit destination, attracting visitors from around the world and honoring the region’s rich legacy.
At the heart of this transformative project lies the development of a cutting-edge visitor center, designed as a bustling hub. It will feature welcoming reception areas, shops, administrative offices, flight booking services, restaurants, and inviting cafeterias.
Another significant aspect is the creation of the Peace Building and Square, envisioned as a vibrant space for events and gatherings. It will include a museum, a grand theater, meeting rooms, and additional dining options.
The Wadi Al-Deir area will offer a unique adventure experience, complete with a scenic walkway, convenient parking, and a camel stable for those wishing to explore the desert in traditional style.
For eco-conscious travelers, the eco-lodge extension promises 192 environmentally friendly hotel rooms and 56 luxurious suites. A desert garden will connect the lodge to the Mountain Hotel, along with a historic walkway tracing the footsteps of Prophet Moses.
The Mountain Hotel itself will provide a cozy retreat with 144 rooms and suites. The adjacent tourist resort on the plateau will include a 1,200m2 reception area, charming villas, and intimate chalets.
A lively tourist bazaar area will feature 16 bazaars spread across a 1,500m2 space. Meanwhile, the residential neighborhood of Al-Zaytuna will offer 21 hotel complexes, housing a total of 546 residential units in a community-focused environment.
The project also includes the construction of a new government complex in St. Catherine. This complex will feature the city council building, open areas, ample parking, and a social club, all within a 1,920m2 urban development.
Furthermore, the bedouin housing area and heritage town center will undergo significant upgrades. This includes the renovation of the Holy Valley Mosque and the addition of new shops and bazaars, blending traditional elements with modern conveniences.
Supporting this transformation is a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade. Key improvements include the development of efficient road networks, enhanced facilities, and flood protection measures throughout the city. Major infrastructure projects include strengthening the road to St. Catherine International Airport, upgrading the electricity network and transformer stations, and optimizing the Abu Redis – St. Catherine water pipeline.
Unveiled in 2020, the Great Transfiguration Project is a multi-billion-pound initiative led by the New Urban Communities Authority. It aligns with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s vision to nurture and develop this remarkable region.
In March, Prime Minister Madbouly expressed Egypt’s intention to present the Great Transfiguration Project as a “gift to the entire world and all religions.” Recognizing its profound significance, which encompasses Islamic, Christian, and Jewish heritage, this project is poised to become a beacon of spiritual, cultural, and environmental tourism, inviting the world to discover the unique wonders of St. Catherine.
