In a heartwarming display of both Bitcoin advocacy and humanitarianism, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has donated 2 BTC to renowned philanthropist Shin Fujiyama. This generous contribution will go towards funding the construction of 1,000 schools in Honduras, a nation grappling with high poverty levels.
The news was shared by Stacy Herbert, Director of El Salvador’s National Bitcoin Office, who revealed that President Bukele personally donated the Bitcoin from his own wallet. A video accompanying the announcement captures the emotional moment when Fujiyama receives the news, expressing his profound gratitude to the president.
Fujiyama is currently on a remarkable 3,000 km charity run to raise funds for the ambitious school construction project. His initiative, Students Helping Honduras, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to addressing socioeconomic challenges in the region.
Inspired by President Bukele’s vision for Bitcoin, Fujiyama embarked on this extraordinary journey. Herbert stated, “He watched videos of President Bukele to gather the courage and the inspiration to just do it.”
This donation further underscores Bukele’s unwavering commitment to Bitcoin. El Salvador has been a pioneer in Bitcoin adoption, making it legal tender in 2021. Bukele has consistently advocated for Bitcoin’s potential as a tool for economic empowerment and has reaffirmed his commitment to purchasing one Bitcoin daily. As of today, El Salvador holds 5,912.76 Bitcoin in its reserves, valued at $397 million.
However, while Bukele remains optimistic about Bitcoin’s potential, he acknowledged in August that its uptake in El Salvador hasn’t been as widespread as anticipated. He stressed that the country hasn’t forced Bitcoin adoption but rather offered it as an option, with users who embraced it benefiting from its price appreciation.
Bukele’s recent donation highlights the growing role Bitcoin is playing in promoting social good. It serves as a testament to its potential to transcend traditional financial systems and empower initiatives focused on improving lives. As the world continues to grapple with poverty and inequality, Bitcoin’s potential for positive impact is becoming increasingly evident.
