Bandai Namco’s recent Q1 FY25 financial results showcased a remarkable impact from the release of Elden Ring’s latest expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Despite flat operating profits due to the amortization of development costs for specific games, the DLC’s success propelled the company’s sales performance.
In a remarkable feat, Shadow of the Erdtree sold over 5 million copies in just three days after its release. This impressive sales figure represents a significant portion of Bandai Namco’s total game sales for the quarter, accounting for 58% of the 8.6 million copies sold during Q1’25 (April – June 2024).
Bandai Namco acknowledged the DLC’s strong performance, stating that it “got off to a good start and contributed greatly to our business performance.” This success further emphasizes the enduring popularity of Elden Ring, a game that has already sold over 25 million copies worldwide.
The success of Shadow of the Erdtree also extended to Kadokawa Corp., the parent company of Elden Ring developer FromSoftware. Kadokawa reported an 80% increase in gaming sales revenue and a 108% year-over-year jump in gaming operating profit, directly attributed to Elden Ring’s continued success and the impact of Shadow of the Erdtree.
The meteoric rise of Shadow of the Erdtree underscores the fervent fan base of Elden Ring and the enduring appeal of the game’s world. The DLC’s strong sales numbers suggest a bright future for the game, further solidifying its position as a global gaming phenomenon.
