Election Commission Committed to Holding Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Polls Soon

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed its firm commitment to conducting assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest possible opportunity. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, during a press conference on Friday, August 9, 2024, emphasized the ECI’s resolve to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process, unhindered by any internal or external forces. Mr. Kumar further highlighted the unanimous support among all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir for holding assembly elections as soon as possible.

The ECI delegation, led by Mr. Kumar, is currently on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, meticulously assessing the preparedness of both the administration and security agencies for the upcoming polls. The delegation, which also includes Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and S.S. Sandhu, held significant discussions with J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dullo and Union Territory Police Chief R.R. Swain on Friday, focusing on the necessary arrangements for a successful election.

It’s noteworthy that assembly elections have not taken place in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014. The polls were initially scheduled for early 2019 following the dissolution of the legislative body of the erstwhile state in 2018. However, subsequent events, including the bifurcation of J&K into Union territories in August 2019 and a delimitation exercise completed in 2022, delayed the electoral process.

In December 2023, the Supreme Court of India issued a directive to the central government, urging them to conclude the election process by September 30, 2024. The ECI’s current visit and statements underscore their dedication to complying with the court’s order and ensuring democratic participation in Jammu and Kashmir.
