The tragic death of Eli Kelly, a 21-year-old contractor working at the St Ives gold mine in Western Australia, has sent shockwaves through the community. Loved ones have poured out their condolences on social media, describing Kelly as a “wonderful human” and a “kind soul.”
Kelly’s partner shared the devastating news on social media, writing: “Fly high my love.” Many expressed their grief and offered their support to Kelly’s family and friends, highlighting his exceptional character and the profound loss they are experiencing.
The circumstances surrounding Kelly’s death remain unclear, but police have confirmed that the incident is being treated as a workplace fatality. WorkSafe is currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
Tragically, this is the second fatal incident at the St Ives operation in less than two years. In October 2022, Perth FIFO worker Terry Hogan, 37, lost his life while working at the Hamlet underground mine.
St Ives gold mine is owned by Gold Fields, and Acting Executive Vice-President for Australia Graeme Ovens expressed the company’s deep sadness and extended their condolences to Kelly’s loved ones. Operations at the mine have been suspended out of respect for the deceased and to support the affected individuals.
Acting WorkSafe Commissioner Sally North also conveyed her condolences to Kelly’s family and friends and emphasized that a report will be prepared for the coroner. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details will be released at this time to respect the privacy of those involved.
