Moss, often seen as an eyesore in gardens, can be effectively eliminated with a surprising household item: laundry detergent. This affordable solution requires no strenuous scrubbing, as nature’s rain showers will do the work for you.
According to gardening expert Steven Bell, the secret lies in the detergent’s composition. Scatter it over the dry mossy patches, and let the upcoming rainfall wash it away. This straightforward method is not only budget-friendly but also gentle on the environment, posing no threat to adjacent grass or plant life.
For larger areas, create a solution by mixing laundry detergent with water and spraying it generously on the affected areas. The moss may take several days to disappear completely.
Moss, despite its small size, plays a significant role in the garden’s ecosystem. It retains moisture in the soil, prevents erosion, and provides a habitat for beneficial insects. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid eradicating it entirely.
If you prefer a more natural approach, gardening expert Craig Morley suggests a bicarbonate of soda solution. Dissolve two to three tablespoons in a liter of water and apply it to the moss on a dry day. Avoid contact with grass or other plants. After a few days, the moss should turn brown and dry up, allowing you to rake or dig it up.
Another option is a white vinegar solution. Dilute a tablespoon of vinegar in a few liters of water and spray it directly onto the moss patches daily until it dies. If necessary, increase the vinegar concentration. Once the moss is dead, rake or dig it up to remove it from your garden.
