Elimini, a new US-based company, has emerged on the world stage with a bold mission: to lead the charge in carbon removal and generate renewable energy. Launched at Climate Week NYC, Elimini is dedicated to permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere while simultaneously producing clean, 24/7 power. This ambitious undertaking will focus on advancing bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology, both in the United States and internationally.
The company’s arrival comes at a critical time. Scientists and policymakers agree that to limit global warming to 1.5°C or 2°C, we need a drastic shift in how we generate energy. This involves rapidly expanding renewable energy sources and deploying carbon removal technologies at a massive scale. Elimini’s BECCS technology uniquely addresses both of these challenges.
Elimini is backed by a strong coalition of investors, partners, and advisors. The company has secured significant carbon dioxide removal (CDR) offtake agreements with leading companies such as Ultrabulk, Holborn Trading, and Karbon-X, ensuring a market for the carbon removals they produce. Additionally, Elimini has established a prestigious Advisory Council comprised of experts from across the carbon removal value chain, including David Hill, Miranda Ballentine, Melissa Lott, and Freddie Davis. This council will guide Elimini’s strategy and ensure the company stays true to its mission.
Research collaborations are another key element of Elimini’s strategy. The company is partnering with leading institutions like the University of Texas, University of Houston, and Stephen F. Austin State University to push the boundaries of carbon capture technology. They are also sponsoring the SMART CDR Competition, a global initiative encouraging university students to innovate in the field of carbon removal.
Elimini’s focus extends beyond technology. The company understands the importance of sustainable biomass sourcing. They have partnered with Manulife Investment Management and Molpus Woodlands to secure sustainably sourced woody biomass for their BECCS operations in the US Southeast. They have also launched a program to assist local landowners in managing their forests sustainably, ensuring a reliable and responsible supply chain.
To further accelerate their growth, Elimini has selected the engineering firm Sargent & Lundy as the owner’s engineer for their first BECCS facility in the US. This project is already under development and, once operational, will generate 300 megawatts of renewable energy while capturing 3 million tons of CO2 annually – the equivalent of 100 commercial airliners!
With a clear vision and strong partnerships, Elimini is poised to become a leading force in the carbon removal market. Their ambition to transform the global economy from a carbon emitter to a carbon remover is a powerful message in a world facing climate crisis. As Laurie Fitzmaurice, Elimini’s President, aptly stated, “Elimini is entering the market at a critical time for our planet and the global economy, when unprecedented demand for power threatens to extend the world’s dependence on coal and other fossil fuels. By advancing BECCS and other carbon removal technologies in the United States and beyond, we will provide organizations and governments with realistic alternatives to power their communities and businesses while staying on track to achieve their climate commitments.”
