Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), has criticized Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following a court ruling requiring X to remove footage of an alleged terrorist attack in Sydney.
Australia’s Federal Court recently ordered X to temporarily hide posts containing video of the incident, in which a teenager was charged with terrorism for knifing an Assyrian priest and others. X claimed to have already blocked the posts from Australian users, but Australia’s e-Safety Commissioner argued that the content should be removed due to its explicit violence.
Musk reacted strongly to the ruling, questioning if the Prime Minister believed he should have jurisdiction over the entire world. He also accused the Australian government of overreach and censorship, posting a meme depicting X as the champion of free speech and other platforms as symbols of censorship and propaganda.
Albanese responded by asserting that Australia will take necessary steps to counter Musk’s actions. He condemned Musk’s perceived arrogance and disregard for decency, emphasizing that the country will not tolerate the promotion of violent content on its platforms.
Musk’s criticism of the Australian government has sparked a debate about the role of social media platforms in moderating content and the limits of free speech online.
