Elon Musk, the CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla, has revealed his latest vision for Tesla during the company’s earnings call. This vision centers around the development of an AI-powered fleet of robotaxis for ride-hailing services. According to Gizmodo, this fleet will comprise both new “Cybercabs” and existing autonomous vehicles owned by Tesla users who can dispatch them at their convenience. “Think of it as a combination of Airbnb and Uber,” Musk explained during the call. “There will be some number of cars that Tesla owns itself and operates in the fleet, and then there’ll be a bunch of cars where they’re owned by the end user.” In times of adversity, Elon Musk has consistently staked his businesses on groundbreaking innovations. In this case, he aims to create a fleet of robotaxis to minimize the amount of time Teslas spend idle in garages. The idea of a robotaxi fleet is not new; Musk has been discussing it for several years. In 2019, he predicted that over a million of these driverless vehicles would be operational by 2020. While this prediction has not yet come to pass, Musk remains optimistic. Musk’s long-term vision for Tesla remains centered on AI and robotics, with robotaxis as the cornerstone. According to the CEO, Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, is expected to enter the market by 2025, despite his tendency to be overly enthusiastic about timelines. Upon its release, Musk confidently asserts that Optimus “will be more valuable than everything else combined.”
