Elon Musk has taken another step in his ambitious transformation of the former Twitter, now known as X, with the launch of X TV’s beta version. This new venture is a full-fledged over-the-top (OTT) streaming service, offering a range of live channels featuring news, sports, movies, music, and weather.
While the official launch date for the X TV app is yet to be announced, it has already been rolled out on Amazon Fire TV and LG’s webOS-powered smart TVs. It’s also accessible on Google TV, with more platform integrations in the pipeline.
Contrary to what one might expect from a social media platform, X TV delivers a comprehensive streaming experience. The Google Play Store describes it as “X-Stream Service TV,” highlighting its focus on offering a diverse range of live content.
X TV further enhances the viewing experience with features such as Replay TV, allowing users to store up to 72 hours of shows in the cloud. Viewers can also utilize Startover TV, enabling them to start any live show from the beginning. The service also provides a Free Cloud DVR option, permitting users to record up to 100 hours of content at no additional cost.
The beta version of X TV is currently exclusive to Android smart TVs and accessible to users with an X account. It can be found by searching for X TV in the device’s app store.
Elon Musk first revealed his plans for X TV back in April. At the time, X CEO Linda Yaccarino emphasized the app’s goal of delivering real-time, engaging content to consumers’ smart TVs, creating an immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.
This latest venture comes amidst a period of change and challenges for X, with the platform facing controversies and legal battles. X Corp is slated to close its San Francisco headquarters on September 13th. Additionally, the platform was banned by Brazil after failing to comply with a Supreme Court order to appoint a new legal representative.
