Elton John Amuses at Trump’s ‘Little Rocket Man’ Nickname for Kim Jong Un

Sir Elton John recently shared his lighthearted reaction to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s use of his song title ‘Rocket Man’ as a nickname for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. During an interview at the Toronto Film Festival, John revealed he found Trump’s choice, inspired by his hit song, amusing.

‘I laughed, I thought that was brilliant,’ John stated, adding that he’s always been friendly with Trump and appreciates his support. The singer even remarked, ‘Good on you, Donald.’

However, according to former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s 2022 memoir, Trump had to explain the nickname to Kim, who was unfamiliar with the ‘Tiny Dancer’ singer. The anecdote reveals an interesting detail: Trump gifted Kim an Elton John CD as a present and even signed it. He also made sure to remove the ‘Made in South Korea’ sticker before presenting it to Kim.

This amusing story highlights a complex relationship between Trump and Kim, characterized by periods of engagement and tension. In July 2023, a North Korean diplomat who defected to South Korea reported that North Korea expressed willingness to resume nuclear talks if Trump were to return to the White House. However, North Korea has also rejected Trump’s claims of friendship and indicated readiness for nuclear action amid rising tension with the U.S.

John’s comments were made during the global premiere of the Disney+ documentary ‘Elton John: Never Too Late,’ which explores his career and personal life. The documentary will have a limited U.S. theatrical run in November and be available on Disney+ on Dec. 13.
