Emirates Makes Sustainability Strides with Sustainable Aviation Fuel at London Heathrow

Emirates Airlines has taken a significant step towards sustainability by partnering with Shell Aviation to introduce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at London Heathrow Airport. This marks the airline’s first use of SAF at Heathrow and the largest amount acquired by Emirates to date. The SAF, blended with traditional jet fuel, will be integrated into Emirates’ flights until the end of summer 2024, representing a crucial step in the airline’s sustainability journey.

The SAF will be managed using comprehensive reporting methods, tracking its sustainability attributes. Emirates supports the London Heathrow SAF Incentive Programme, which promotes the affordability of SAF for airlines and aims to boost the market’s growth. With this collaboration, Emirates seeks to reduce emissions and contribute to the wider adoption of sustainable fuels in the aviation industry.

Emirates is eagerly exploring opportunities to increase the use of SAF within its network and is collaborating with various organizations to support SAF initiatives. The airline has previously used SAF on flights from Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon, and Oslo, and plans to integrate SAF into its fueling operations at Singapore Changi Airport this month.

Emirates’ commitment to sustainability extends beyond SAF. The airline is optimizing flight operations, reducing aircraft weight, and charting more efficient flight routes to further reduce its environmental impact. The airline has also joined the Solent Cluster in the UK, an initiative aimed at driving low-carbon investments and establishing an SAF plant capable of producing up to 200,000 tonnes of SAF annually by 2032.

Since 1987, Emirates has been serving the UK, offering 131 weekly flights to seven destinations, including six daily A380 flights to London Heathrow. The airline’s dedication to sustainability aligns with its commitment to providing its customers with a superior travel experience while minimizing its environmental footprint.
