Emmys 2023: Canadian Humor, ‘The Crown’ Triumphs, and ‘SHOGUN’ Makes History

The 76th Emmy Awards brought a night of laughter, heartwarming moments, and a historic win for a Japanese production. The ceremony was hosted by the father-son duo, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, known for their roles in the comedy series ‘Schitt’s Creek’. Their opening monologue poked fun at the Canadian stereotype of politeness, cleverly referencing the strict time limits imposed on acceptance speeches.

Elizabeth Debicki, who portrayed Princess Diana in ‘The Crown,’ took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In her acceptance speech, she acknowledged the privilege and honor of portraying such an iconic figure.

Adding a unique twist to the awards ceremony, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, who rose to international fame with their roles in the film ‘Y Tu Mamá También,’ presented an award in Spanish. Their decision to break the tradition of English-only presentations was a powerful statement of inclusion and representation.

Richard Gadd’s ‘The Great S**tstorm’ won multiple awards in the Limited or Anthology Series category, a testament to the raw and personal story he crafted based on his own experience with stalking. In his acceptance speech, he poignantly spoke about overcoming trauma and using his experience to offer hope to others facing similar challenges.

The night also saw a surprise nod to Will Smith’s infamous slap at the Oscars. When a veteran screenwriter named Will Smith, not the actor, won an award, he opened his acceptance speech with a humorous line: “Everybody settle down, I’m not the dangerous one.”

But perhaps the most remarkable moment of the night belonged to ‘SHOGUN,’ a historical drama set in 16th century Japan. The series took home an impressive 18 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. Hiroyuki Sanada, who also served as the show’s producer, and Anna Sawai won Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series respectively, making them the first Japanese actors to win Emmys. Sawai, in her emotional acceptance speech, dedicated her award to her mother and all the women who continue to inspire without seeking recognition.

The 76th Emmys truly delivered a night of surprises, memorable moments, and a powerful message of inclusivity and representation. It was a celebration of diverse storytelling and the power of entertainment to move, inspire, and challenge us all.
